The 2017 Places with the Shortest Commute ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the ability to easily navigate an area. This grade takes into account key indicators of a location’s commute, such as method of commuting, commute time, as well as nearby international airports, in an attempt to holistically measure an area’s ease of getting to work. Commute to Work Less Than 20 Minutes The percent of residents who have, on average, a commute to work of less than 20 minutes. U.S. Census 35.0%
Commute to Work More Than 60 Minutes The percent of residents who have, on average, a commute to work of more than 60 minutes. U.S. Census 20.0%
Bike to Work The percent of residents whose primary means of commuting to work is by bike. U.S. Census 15.0%
Take Public Transportation to Work The percent of residents whose primary means of commuting to work is by public transportation (excluding taxis). U.S. Census 15.0%
Walk to Work The percent of residents whose primary means of commuting to work is walking. U.S. Census 15.0%

This ranking assesses 47,923 (graded) places in the U.S. The same methodology is used to produce the Commute Grade for each ranked place. Statistics are primarily obtained from the U.S. Census and represent the most recent data available.
